Not too long ago, Fort Lauderdale was only known for being overrun by teenagers during Spring Break. Thanks to the efforts of the citizens and the government, the city has been cleaned up and made much friendlier to adults who want to come to the area. One of the biggest changes you will find due to these efforts is the increase in the number of marinas and piers as well as restaurants a shops offering free dockage while you are on shore. No one should miss the opportunity to see the magnificent Venice of America sometime during his or her life. Seeing it from boat side is even better.
If you do not have your own boat, there are plenty of options. You will find that most hotels on the ocean rent boats to their visitors. If your hotel does not rent boats, there are many marinas close by. Places like Bills Sunrise Watersports will rent boats by the hour, as well as offering parasailing. Most marinas are full service, meaning they not only rent and sell boats, but also repair them, and outfit them with supplies. Make sure you pay attention to safety regulations when renting a boat. Be sure to wear your life vest and follow any rules provided.
While you are out boating, make sure you look for the local wildlife. Fort Lauderdale is a winter home for manatees, also called sea cows. These large and gentle creatures are suspected to have been confused as mermaids by sailors two hundred years ago. Of course, when you see a manatee, you will wonder why the legend is that mermaids were beautiful! Look for a nose or a tail coming out of the water. They look like big dog noses. There is a plethora of bird life too, and not just the snowbirds! You will find the famous pink flamingoes feeding around here, as well as several different types of seagulls and other birds.
Do not be put off by Fort Lauderdale's image of Spring Break from the teenybopper movies. It is not a staid town by any means, however! Everyone should come and tour Fort Lauderdale at least once by boat. It would be a shame not to.
